Leander Deeny’s Phantasmagoria

HAZELS PHANTASMAGORIA

Came across this book the other day and was totally blown away, its Gothic blunt and witty approach had me gripped from the start to finish. Its like a hormonal love child of Roald Dahl and Tim Burton.

The story starts with a strange almost disclaimer if you will to murder, not just any murder, but that of your parents..

Yep.

Im not touching that with a 50ft barge poll. So i’ll let Leander do the honors.

Hazel, the heroine of the story, travels to her Aunt’s country house for a holiday. Her Aunt is bitter, angry and rude, so Hazel expects her stay to be a nightmare – little does she expect, though, that there are actual nightmares living in the garden. These creatures – scary amalgams of different animals such as gorillas and leopards – haunt her Aunt every night in her dreams with horrific scenarios. Much to her surprise Hazel is drawn into their world of creating and rehearsing these nightmares.

With her new social circle consisting of gorillas crossed with leopards, pythons crossed with porcupines, ducks who smoke cigarettes, wooden-headed dogs and murderers and lunatics Hazel finds herself exploring the scariest depths of the unknown and learns a useful lesson along the way about the nature of friendship. The lively, exciting and fast-paced narrative and quick humour makes this book an addictive read.

Leander Deeny was born in New York, to Irish parents, on December 2nd 1980.

He was educated at St Hugh’s Preparatory School, Bishop Wordsworth Grammar School, Oxford University (Lincoln College), and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, which he left in 2006 – since which time several people have actually paid him to act. In between acting, he has worked as a childrens’ entertainer, a receptionist, and a flyerererer.

At Oxford he was President of the Oxford Revue, editor of Isis Magazine, a deeply ineffectual member of OUDS (Oxford University Drama Society), and a columnist for the Cherwell. He got a 2:1.

Between the ages of 4 and 5 he refused to leave the house unless dressed as a jockey.
He likes whisky, cookery, rock and roll, and falconry. He lives in Peckham. He is five foot seven.
Which is the same height as Tom Cruise. But much taller than Prince. In your face, Prince!

PS – not really, Prince rules – he can be whatever height he pleases.

Leander Deeny also works as an actor. He graduated from LAMDA in 2006. He is represented by Roxane Vacca Management.

Here’s the website attached to the book for furthur details www.leanderdeeny.com

Here’s some reviews of  Leander’s first book, Hazel’s Phantasmagoria:

Wildes Salome

“How pale the Princess is! She is like the shadow of a white rose in a mirror of silver…”

The brutal power of ancient myth collides with twentieth century decadence in Oscar Wilde’s astonishing verse tragedy. Salome, step-daughter of King Herod agrees to perform the mysterious dance of the seven veils but demands in return the head of the King’s most infamous prisoner - John the Baptist.

Wilde’s Salome is a dazzling, shocking piece of storytelling from one of the greatest writers of the last two hundred years. It is fragile, savage and shimmeringly beautiful, rendered in exquisite poetry and unforgettable theatrical images. Headlong and Curve Theatre, Leicester present a vivid contemporary production of this rarely-seen masterpiece.

“She is monstrous thy daughter. I tell thee she is monstrous.”

Jamie Lloyd is one of the most acclaimed young directors in British theatre. Recent work includes Polar Bears (Donmar), Piaf (Donmar / West End), Three Days of Rain (West End) and the award-winning The Pride (Royal Court).

Con O’Neill plays Herod. His extensive stage credits include Prick Up Your Ears (Comedy Theatre), The Caretaker (Cruicible/Tricycle), Telstar (New Ambassadors),  Mother Clapp’s Molly House, Southwark Fair (National Theatre), A Tribute to the Blues Brothers and Blood Brothers for which he won an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical. His screen credits include Telstar, Learners (BBC), My Hero (BBC) and Trial and Retribution.

Zawe Ashton plays Salome. Her stage credits include This Wide Night (Clean Break/Soho), The Frontline, Othello (Shakespeare’s Globe), The Arsonists, Rhinoceros, Gone Too Far (Royal Court) and Moon on a Rainbow Shawl (Haymarket). Her screen credits include Freefall, St Trinian’s II, Blitz and Sherlock, A Study in Pink (BBC).

Jaye Griffiths plays Herodias. Her theatre credits include Category B (Tricycle), Seize the Day (Tricycle), Othello (Cheek by Jowl), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Bristol Old Vic). Her many television credits include A Touch of Frost (ITV), Criminal Justice (BBC), Kingdom (ITV), Silent Witness (BBC) and Hunger (ITV).

Salome will open at Curve Theatre, Leicester before embarking on a UK tour prior to a London opening at Hampstead Theatre in June.

Spontaneous Reels

Came across these little gems today, really like the premise. Here’s the mission statement:

” Spontaneous Reels was started by Andrew Nolan and Tristan Shepherd. The process takes just over two days. The rules are simple: meet on Friday evening to discuss ideas and form a plan, shoot the movie on Saturday and edit it on Sunday. Ideas cannot be discussed beforehand and the product is finalized on Sunday night – no tinkering. Good, bad, inspired, insipid, funny, dull, moving, crass – whatever results is the result. ”

Some really funny moments captured in quite an ambitious project

Jay Z produces broadway play about Fela Kuti

Love him or hate him, Jay Z is using his fame and influence (at last) to actually educate the world about something of great importance and substance. He’s joined forces with Will Smith to help produce a broadway musical, portraying the life of the late Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, political activist and Afrobeat pioneer who died in 1997. He wasn’t afraid to challenge the status quo and call out the corruption he saw in the government.

Music for the production ‘Fela’ has been arranged by the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, who have previously contributed to albums by Foals and TV On The Radio.

Watch this space.

Deep fried parking ticket chicken sandwiches

I stumbled across a gentleman who goes by the name of Mr Chi City today. He’s a proud Chicago resident who gets parking tickets all the time and decides to document his experiences… Very funny indeed. He even ends up deep frying one of his parking tickets into a chicken sandwich. Turns out he’s a bit of a celebrity now and he even receives fan mail.

Here’s one of our favourite clips.
