Shigurui – シグルイ

Shigurui – シグルイ

Was introduced to this by Inkfetish ( my own personal oracle of anime/manga ). Its fluid animation style and sensitive colour pallets make this quite a painfully beautiful visual experience. The violence is extreme yet the colour saturation and contrast give you a sense of some ghost like realm where the fallen samurai still wage their endless war amongst a backdrop of peaceful silent lotus blossom.

Only the Japanese seem to able to find this eerie balance in their illustration/animation styles. The story itself as you would expect is epic, it begins in 1629 Shizuoka during Tokugawa Tadanaga’s rule. The daimyo staged a tournament where the participants fought with real steel Japanese swords rather than bokken (“wooden sword”), against his vassals’ strong objection. The story revolves around the first match between the one-armed swordsman Fujiki Gennosuke and the blind samurai Irako Seigen and deals with the circumstances that led the two to participate in Tokugawa’s tournament.

The series was directed by Hirotsugu Hamazaki and written by Seishi Minakami It was produced by Madhouse Studios.

I certainly recommend this to any Anime enthusiast, its a cut above the rest, Literally.

Though be warned, its not for the faint hearted.
